What this is

Couples Counselling, done properly.

Couples counselling at Trust Therapy is a structured, practical way to understand the cycle you both get pulled into and to change it. Sessions are led by Registered Psychotherapists and supervised clinicians who work with couples every week, and most partners notice a shift within eight to twelve sessions.

You do not have to be in crisis to come. Many couples in Thornhill, Vaughan, and Richmond Hill book because a good relationship has started to feel harder than it should, or because a transition such as a new baby, a move, or a change in work has changed the shape of things.

You might be looking for this if
  • The same disagreement keeps returning and neither of you feels heard
  • Conversations turn into criticism, defensiveness, or silence
  • Trust has been shaken and you are unsure how to rebuild it
  • You feel more like co-managers of a household than partners
  • A new baby, blended family, or big decision has strained the relationship
  • You want to strengthen the relationship before it gets worse
How we work

Our approach in three parts.

01

We start with the pattern, not the blame

The first sessions map the cycle: what each of you does when things get tense, what you are each protecting, and where the conversation breaks. Naming the pattern makes it something you can both work on instead of something one of you is at fault for.

02

Skills you can use mid-argument

Using Emotionally Focused Therapy, Gottman Method principles, and cognitive-behavioural tools, you practise slowing the escalation, repairing after conflict, and saying the thing underneath the complaint. Homework is small and specific.

03

Room for each of you

Some couples add individual relationship sessions so each partner can look at their own half of the pattern. Our Relationship Clinic offers that alongside the joint work.

Marriage counselling in Thornhill

Marriage counselling is couples therapy for a relationship with history: years of habits, shared responsibilities, children, finances and extended family. The work is the same at its core, understanding the pattern between you and changing it, with more attention to the commitments that have built up around it.

We see married couples at every stage, from partners in their first years adjusting to life together, to couples recovering from an affair, to spouses who need a neutral space to decide whether to stay together. Repair after a breach of trust follows a structure: understanding what happened, making room for the hurt, and rebuilding transparency step by step. When one or both of you are unsure about staying, discernment counselling offers a short, focused process to reach a clear decision with respect for each other.

This is for you if
  • You are married or long-term partners and the connection has faded
  • An affair, secret or broken promise has damaged trust
  • Parenting, money, in-laws or faith have become recurring flashpoints
  • Intimacy has dropped off and it is hard to talk about
  • One of you is unsure whether to stay, and the other is afraid to ask
  • You are preparing for marriage and want to start on solid ground
Good to know

Questions people ask us.

Is marriage counselling different from couples counselling?

The methods are the same. Marriage counselling tends to involve longer histories and more shared commitments, such as children, property and extended family, so sessions give those more attention. Either way you start with the same free consultation.

Can marriage counselling help after an affair?

Yes, when both partners are willing to do the work. Recovery is structured and takes time, and many couples come out of it with a more honest relationship than they had before. If you are not sure you want to stay, discernment counselling helps you decide first.

Do you offer premarital counselling?

Yes. Premarital counselling covers communication, expectations, money, family and faith before the wedding, and is offered through our Relationship Clinic in Thornhill and online.

Do both partners have to attend every session?

Joint sessions work best when both partners attend, and that is how most couples begin. When one partner is not ready, or a schedule makes it impossible, we can start with one of you and bring the other in later.

How long does couples counselling take?

Many couples see meaningful improvement in eight to twelve sessions when both people are engaged. Sessions are usually weekly or every other week; your therapist will suggest a rhythm once they understand what you are working on.

Can we do couples counselling online from different places?

Yes. Video sessions can be joined from two devices, which suits partners who travel, work shifts, or are living apart while they work things out.

Can I meet in person in Thornhill?

Yes. Our office is at 1118 Centre Street, Suite 205, in Thornhill, with evening hours Monday to Thursday, Friday until 2 PM, and Sunday appointments. If coming in is not practical, the same clinicians see clients by secure video anywhere in Ontario, and in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

Is this covered by insurance?

Most extended health plans cover psychotherapy delivered by a Registered Psychotherapist or Registered Social Worker, and we issue a receipt after every session for you to submit. Coverage amounts and eligible designations vary by plan, so please confirm with your insurer before your first appointment.
