Our therapeutic approach

Our therapists use trauma-informed approaches, including EMDR, CBT, and somatic therapies, adapted to first responder culture. We understand the unique barriers to help-seeking in high-stakes professions and provide a judgment-free, confidential space.

What to expect

Sessions are flexible to accommodate shift schedules, with in-person and virtual options available. All sessions are strictly confidential. We work at your pace, there is no pressure to discuss anything before you feel ready.

What the research says

First responders are exposed to traumatic incidents at rates far exceeding the general population, placing them at significantly elevated risk for PTSD, depression, anxiety, and substance use. Research published in journals such as Occupational and Environmental Medicine and the Journal of Traumatic Stress confirms that specialized, culturally competent mental health care leads to measurably better outcomes for this population compared to generalized therapy.

Going a little deeper

Effective treatment for first responders requires an understanding of shift-work culture, the stigma around help-seeking, and the cumulative nature of occupational trauma. Evidence-based modalities such as EMDR and trauma-focused CBT have demonstrated strong efficacy for occupational PTSD. Our therapists work collaboratively with each client to build resilience, restore functioning, and support long-term wellbeing both on and off duty.

Good to know

Questions people ask us.

Is my information kept confidential?

Yes. All sessions are strictly confidential. We do not share information with employers, unions, or agencies without your explicit written consent, except where required by law.

Do I need a referral to access first responder support?

No referral is needed. You can reach out directly to book a free consultation and we will match you with a therapist experienced in first responder care.

Will my service or employer find out?

No. Nothing is shared with an employer, service or anyone else without your written consent, apart from the narrow legal limits that apply to every therapist in Ontario, which your clinician explains in the first session.

Can I use my benefits?

Usually. Most first responder benefit plans cover psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist, and we issue a receipt after every session. Check your plan’s annual limit and eligible designations before you begin.
