What this is

Depression Therapy, done properly.

Depression is treatable, and psychotherapy is a first-line treatment for it. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, behavioural activation, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy have decades of evidence behind them, and most people who stay with treatment notice their energy, sleep and outlook shift within a few months.

We work with low mood, persistent sadness, loss of interest, burnout, grief that has not lifted, postpartum depression, and depression that sits alongside anxiety, ADHD or chronic illness. If you are not sure whether what you feel counts as depression, that is exactly what the free consultation is for.

You might be looking for this if
  • Low mood or emptiness most days, for two weeks or longer
  • Things you used to enjoy no longer feel worth doing
  • Sleeping much more or much less than usual, or waking exhausted
  • Trouble concentrating, deciding, or getting started on anything
  • Withdrawing from people, or irritability that surprises you
  • A harsh inner voice, guilt, or thoughts that you are a burden
How we work

Our approach in three parts.

01

Start with what is possible this week

Depression shrinks activity, and less activity deepens depression. Early sessions rebuild small, specific routines and contact with people, chosen with you, so momentum returns before the hardest thinking work begins.

02

Work on the thinking that keeps it going

CBT helps you notice and test the beliefs that feed low mood, and ACT helps you act on what matters to you even while the feelings are still there. Your therapist chooses and blends approaches around you, not the other way round.

03

Plan for staying well

Relapse prevention is part of the work, not an afterthought. You leave with a clear picture of your early warning signs and what to do about them, and many clients move to occasional check-ins.

Good to know

Questions people ask us.

Do I need medication as well as therapy?

Not necessarily. Psychotherapy on its own is an effective treatment for mild to moderate depression. For more severe depression, therapy and medication together often work best. Our therapists do not prescribe, but they will tell you honestly if they think a conversation with your doctor would help, and they work alongside physicians all the time.

How long does treatment for depression take?

Many people feel a real difference within eight to twelve sessions, and a full course of CBT for depression commonly runs twelve to twenty sessions. Longer-standing or recurring depression can take more. Your therapist reviews progress with you regularly so the plan stays honest.

What if I have thoughts of not wanting to be here?

Please tell us. Those thoughts are common in depression and talking about them is safe here. If you are in immediate danger, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department, or call or text 9-8-8, the Suicide Crisis Helpline, any time.

Can I meet in person in Thornhill?

Yes. Our office is at 1118 Centre Street, Suite 205, in Thornhill, with evening hours Monday to Thursday, Friday until 2 PM, and Sunday appointments. If coming in is not practical, the same clinicians see clients by secure video anywhere in Ontario, and in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

Is this covered by insurance?

Most extended health plans cover psychotherapy delivered by a Registered Psychotherapist or Registered Social Worker, and we issue a receipt after every session for you to submit. Coverage amounts and eligible designations vary by plan, so please confirm with your insurer before your first appointment.
